Nationwide institutions

This section provides information about nationwide Polish institutions and associations covering both film industry self-management bodies appointed by the film environment people as well as institutions established by the local authorities in compliance with respective statutes. All these organizations are concerned with all problems that the film industry faces, beginning from the copyright and related rights issues to financial support of the film production.

 

Polski Instytut Sztuki Filmowej
[The Polish Film Institute]

The Polish Film Institute is the state largest institution supporting cinematography in Poland. It came into being in 2005 and was modeled on similar institutions already operating in the European Union countries. The Institute's Operational Programs involve film production subsidizing, development, distribution and promotion of film culture as well as promotion of Polish cinematography abroad. It is also the author of such strategic projects as regional film funds, School Film Library, national program of digital movie theaters, and also IT "First Take” project for young filmmakers.

Stowarzyszenie Filmowców Polskich (SFP)
[The Polish Filmmakers Association]

The Polish Filmmakers Association has been in existence since 1966 and is Poland's largest organization of film professionals with over 1400 representatives of all film professions as its members. The Association has been either organizing, or co-organizing, or participating as a strategic partner in most important film events, reviews and festivals in Poland. It is a major organizer of the festival of debuting young filmmakers at the "Young People and the Film in Koszalin" festival, and a co-organizer of Polish participation in the International Film Festivals in Cannes and Berlin.

Since 2008 the Andrzej Munk Studio of "Young People and the Film" created by SFP, MKIDN, PISF i TVP SA has been operating under the Association's supervision. The Studio is a producer of movie debuts and a coordinator of popular programs supporting young artists such as "30 minutes", "First Document", "Young Animation", "Scriptwriting Laboratory".

The Association has been cooperating with tens of film festivals and participating in numerous events for children and young people in Poland and worldwide under the Polish and international program of the "Polish Young Spectator Movie.

In 2007 the Polish Filmmakers Association and private producers established the Foundation of "Polish Film " with an objective to distribute Polish artistic films, including debuting ones.

Since 2007 the Polish Film Stuntman School has been supervised by the Association.

The association has been a member of most important world audiovisual organizations such as FERA, CISAC, AGICOA, FIPRESCI, CIFEJ, and joined World Cinema Alliance, recently.

The Association has been responsible for popular publishing company and Website portals like "The SFP Film Magazine" quarterly, "bazafilmowa.pl" and "filmdladzieci.pl".

Związek Autorów i Producentów Audiowizualnych
[Union of Audiovisual Authors and Producers]

ZAPA is now one of the most efficient collective management organizations in Poland. It came into being in 1995 as the organization unit of the Polish Filmmakers Association. Its major objective is to protect the rights of directors, scriptwriters, production designers, directors of photography and sound, costume designers, film editors and producers of audiovisual works. At present the organization represents over 2300 artists and their inheritors and over 250 producers in Poland, and based on agreements of mutual representation concluded with international organizations – tens of thousands authorized authors and producers worldwide, also hundreds of thousands audiovisual works. ZAPA has negotiated and signed contracts with public and private users, it cooperates with many national and foreign organizations, and it monitors a dynamic market of cable operators. The fundamental element of SFP - ZAPA activities is proper identification of audiovisual works, which enables to pay its authors and producers their due royalties pretty soon. In consideration of all this, ZAPA became ISAN Registration Agency in 2007 and part of the international system for identification of audiovisual works.

Krajowa Izba Producentów Audiowizualnych
[The National Chamber of Audiovisual Producers]

The chamber is the industry business authority. Basic objectives of the chamber include among others: supporting development of audiovisual production in Poland, inspiring and participating in all activities involving legislative and decision-making processes that affect the Polish audiovisual market trends, protecting copyrights and neighbouring rights of audiovisual producers, representing the circles of audiovisual producers in their relations with national agencies in particular, shaping and propagating ethical principles in business activities of audiovisual producers.

The chamber, in cooperation with the Polish Film Institute, outlined a proposal for establishing the Regional Film Funds (RFF) in Poland, which are supported by established the Polish Audiovisual Centre Foundation (FPCA) and by carrying out the Regional Audiovisual Initiative (RIA) project.
